Cleanse and Define Hair with Rhassoul Clay

Published: Last Updated on

Rhassoul clay is a natural product that can be used to cleanse the hair and scalp.  For those with curly and coiled hair, it may also help to define curls and strengthen the hair.

What is Rhassoul Clay?

Rhassoul clay, also known as Ghassoul clay or Moroccan Red Clay, is a natural earthen clay mined from volcanic rock from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.  Only clay mined from this Atlas mountain region can be called Rhassoul.  Rhassoul clay has a pinkish brown color and a soft silken texture.  North African women have used Rhassoul clay for centuries on the hair and skin.

For the skin, Rhassoul clay is used to cleanse, gently soften and reduce blemishes.  Rhassoul clay is nutrient-rich and high in silica, magnesium, iron, calcium, sodium and aluminum.  Rhassoul clay is composed of 58% silica.  Silica is thought to strengthen the hair, supporting growth, luster and length retention.

Clay Hair Cleansing

Clay washes  cleanse and detoxify the hair and scalp without stripping the hair of all of its protective sebum.   They are popular among those looking to lead a more holistic and toxin-free lifestyle.   Rhassoul clay washes cleanse the hair gently, leaving it moisturized and soft.  Another benefit of Rhassoul clay is that since it’s a natural cleanser, it helps avoid the synthetic stripping and drying ingredients commonly found in commercial shampoos.

Besides Rhassoul, there are other types of clay washes and hair rinses, including Bentonite and Kaolin clay.  However, Rhassoul wash is generally thought to be less drying than other types, leaving the hair softer and more defined.  Because Rhassoul clay is rarer, you’ll pay a little more for it—though still a lot less than trendy, synthetic rich commercial shampoos.

Rhassoul Clay Hair Wash Recipe

  • Rhassoul clay (1-2tbsp)
  • Water (add enough to get your desired consistency)
  • Oil of choice (avocado, olive, rosehip, etc…)
  • Essential oil (a few drops of your favorites)

When making a clay wash:

  • Use plastic utensils and bowls, as metal may react with the clay
  • Clay washes can be alkaline, so you may want to use some aloe vera juice or an apple cider vinegar rinse to restore your hair’s pH and close the cuticle after doing a clay wash.
