You can’t read a beauty blog or flip through a beauty magazine without seeing a jade roller. Fashionistas and facialists from China to the US tout the many benefits of using a jade roller on your face. Clearer skin, reduced signs of aging and reduced eye puffiness are all said to be benefits of using a jade roller. Are jade rollers legit?
A Jade roller is a small handheld tool that is made to be rolled on the face. Jade is a precious mineral that is prized in ancient Asian art and jewelry. From the earliest Chinese dynasties, jade was considered an “imperial gem,” and some sources claim that there are ancient Chinese references to jade being used to help clear a ‘spotty complexion.’ Jade has been used in Chinese holistic medicine, and some claim that it has calming, spiritual and energizing qualities.

Are Jade Rollers Legit: Scientific Evidence
While lots of people use jade rollers, and while they are generally safe to use, I really couldn’t find solid scientific evidence supporting their claimed benefits. So, are jade rollers legit? You may have to try one and see!
Jade Rollers May Reduce Puffiness
While I couldn’t find any studies to support whether or not jade rollers are legit, they might reduce facial puffiness. Jade (if you have the real stuff) is naturally a cool stone. In fact, touching jade can help you figure out if it’s real or not, since pure jade should be cool to the touch). Massaging a cool jade stone (or really anything cool) may help reduce puffiness and swelling by constricting blood vessels and decreasing inflammation. Some people even cool their jade rollers in the fridge prior to using them to help reduce swelling even more.
Jade Rollers May Improve Circulation
Massaging your face with a jade roller, or anything, can improve the blood flow in your skin. Theoretically, increasing the flow of blood may help rid your tissues of excess fluids and toxins.
Jade Rollers May Relax You
While this may not answer the question, ‘Are Jade Rollers Legit?’ rolling a cool stone over your skin can relax you and put you in a more peaceful state of mind. If you’ve had a hot rock massage, you know the benefits of warm pressure on the skin. It certainly feels good. A jade roller might do the same for you.

How to Use a Jade Roller
If you’re into your self-care like that, and you decide to give jade rollers a whirl, try using it on clean skin after you’ve applied any serums or oils. You should use it in an upwards rolling motion for about 5 minutes in the morning and evening. It’s important to roll upwards to try to help lift the skin. Make sure that your jade roller is clean before each use too! You don’t want to spread bacteria and cause acne breakouts or a skin infection.

There isn’t any scientific evidence to support many of the claimed benefits of jade rollers. However, a cool stone on the skin might spark relaxation, decreased puffiness and improved circulation, and all of these could translate into better looking skin.
