Published: Last Updated on

Scalp itch can be dreadful.  Not only is it annoying and uncomfortable, but it can also be embarrassing– especially if you’re leaving white flakes all over every time you scratch your head! While there are many causes of scalp itch, here are some common remedies that can help fix an itchy scalp.

There are many medical conditions that can cause an itchy scalp.  Common causes include:

To help fix an itchy scalp, you might find some relief from some of these common household products and over-the-counter treatments.  However, you should always see your doctor if your scalp itch is very severe, interfering with other activities, or if you have other symptoms, such as sores, swelling or pain.

1. Warm Olive Oil

Olive oil is in many kitchen cabinets.  High in fatty acids, it supports moisturized hair and imparts a healthy luster.  It might also help soothe an itchy scalp.  Applying some warm olive oil onto the scalp might help lift itchy scales and crusts from your scalp.  Try warming the olive oil by rubbing it between your hands and then gently massaging it into your scalp.  After a couple hours, wash it out using an antidandruff shampoo like Nizoral.

2. Emu Oil

Emu oil is also often used to help fix an itchy scalp.  It contains oleic acid, linoleic acid and antioxidants, which help emu oil fight inflammation and can help it hydrate your skin and scalp.  In one study, emu oil helped decrease scalp itching, and showed no side effects (Although it wasn’t as effective as steroid and antifungal medications).  The authors concluded that emu oil was a useful alternative for those with dandruff and scalp irritation wishing to avoid the potential side effects of steroid creams.

3. Bentonite Clay Mask

Bentonite clay is a finely ground natural material derived from volcanic ash.  Besides improving curl definition and reducing tangles, many people use bentonite clay as a soothing mask to help fix scalp itch and irritation.  Bentonite clay has been shown to help reduce irritation and itch in poison ivy.  Check out this post to see how to do a bentonite clay mask.

5. Ketoconazole Shampoo

Ketoconazole is a popular anti-fungal shampoo that can help fix itchy scalp.  It is used to treat flaking and dandruff too.  Dandruff and itchy scalp can be caused by an increased response to a common yeast on the scalp, called Malassezia furfur.  Ketoconazole shampoo helps to treat this yeast and calm an irritated scalp.

6. Salicylic Acid Shampoo

Salicylic acid is both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial and can help fix dry itchy scalp. It’s a beta hydroxy acid, and it’s found naturally in some plants.  It softens thick hard patches on the scalp and helps them wash away more easily, reducing irritation and itch.  It’s commonly used for both psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis.

7. Selenium Sulfide Shampoo

Remember Selsun Blue commercials?   Shampoos like Selsun Blue and Head and Shoulders Clinical Strength contain an active ingredient called selenium sulfide.  Selenium sulfide shampoos reduce buildup on your scalp and help cut the yeast that can trigger some forms of scalp itch and dandruff.  Many of these shampoos should be used twice per week, and you should follow the instructions on the bottle.

8. Zinc Pyrithione Shampoo

Zinc pyrithione is antibacterial and antifungal and can help fix some types of itchy scalp.  It’s commonly recommended for treating seborrheic dermatitis.   DHS Zinc is a popular zinc pyrithione shampoo and can help calm and soothe itchy scalp.

Peppermint oil may help soothe an itchy and irritated scalp associated with dandruff.  Peppermint oil contains a chemical called menthol, which has a cooling effect on the skin.  One study found that peppermint oil, diluted in sesame oil, helped soothe itch in pregnant women.  Peppermint oil should not be placed directly on the skin or scalp!  It should always be diluted in a carrier first.  You can add it to your favorite scalp oil, like baobab or olive.
